OpenDots: a free, open-source take on OpenAI's dots

OpenAI's dots (launched September 29, 2026) need ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium or Enterprise. OpenDots is free software you host yourself: no plan required, but you pay for your own model and services.

How it works

1. 1Specialist Dots. Give each Dot a name, a role, instructions and the tools it's allowed to use.
2. 2Its own computer. Each Dot can get a computer through OpenBot services: browser control, human takeover, files and terminal, with permissions set per Dot.
3. 3Draft first. Ask for a draft before saving. A card pauses the chat with "Approve & save" or "Decline".
4. 4Voice calls. Realtime speech paired with a separate compute agent, so longer work runs while you talk. Voice needs its own provider config.
5. 5Slack. Mention a Dot in Slack via Channels SDK. The README says live Slack still needs connected-service verification.
6. 6Spaces & pages. A searchable library of pages you can edit. Single-owner: no shared editing yet.
7. 7Any model. Any OpenAI-compatible model: set OPENAI_BASE_URL and OPENAI_MODEL in .env.

Good to know

• Open http://127.0.0.1:5173. See docs/SETUP.md for Slack, calls, the browser and Docker, and docs/COMPUTERS.md for Dot computers.
• OPENAI_BASE_URL changes the compute model only. The included call adapter uses OpenAI's Realtime API.
• Early alpha, and a template, not a hosted product: you run it and configure the services.
• Not the same as composio-community/open-dot, which is a separate Mac app.
